Hardware & Building Materials
Hardware, Lumber & Building Supplies & Paint, Glass & Wallpaper Stores
Traditional hardware stores have lost 26% of their units since 1970. Lumber and building suppliers and paint, glass and wallpaper stores each lost 8% of their outlets during the same period.
Home Centers
The decline in the number of traditional hardware and building material stores is attributable to the success of home centers. Despite a drop in the number of home centers in 1997, this "big box" retail category continues to be the strongest in its sector.
